Lester Named Washington Co.
Teacher of Year

Washington County Education Association member Michael Lester, a fifth grade teacher at Abingdon Elementary School, has been selected as the county’s 2009-10 Teacher of the Year. The other two finalists were also WCEA members: Cindy Jackson of Glade Springs Middle School and Lorrie Gregory of Patrick Henry High School.

More than 100 VEA members from around the commonwealth are part of the 2009-10 class of teachers who have earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. To see a list of Association members who successfully completed the rigorous, year-long process, go to the VEA website at www.veanea.org and click on “In the Classroom.”

Jeremy Utt, co-president of the Isle of Wight Education Association and a math and algebra teacher at Windsor Middle School, has been named a Teacher of Honor by the national organization Kappa Delta Pi. To become a Teacher of Honor, you must have taught for at least three years and submit evidence of leadership, community service, professional development, and meaningful contributions to the education profession.

Denise Baxter, a member of the Stafford Education Association and a culinary arts teacher at Mountain View High School, has earned certification from the American Culinary Federation. To do so, she had to have at least 1,200 hours of teaching experience, pass a written test, videotape a class lesson and complete a judged cooking demonstration.

Fredericksburg Education Association member Cathy Hawkins has received the Anne Crowe Essig Award from the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. Hawkins, who has taught in city schools for 32 years, earned the honor for her community service and for making a difference in numerous lives.

Education Association of Norfolk member Tuwanna Okafor, of St. Helena Elementary School, has been elected to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors.
