Fretwell Names Chestefield Teacher of the Year

Kerry Fretwell
, a member of the Chesterfield Education Association and a ninth grade English teacher at Cosby High School, has been selected as the county's 2008 Teacher of the Year. A former middle school teacher, Fretwell is certified in English, journalism, speech and theater arts.

Liza Schmieder, a member of the Prince George Education Association and a teacher at Prince George High School, was part of a team of teachers that received the 2007 Group Award for outstanding contributions to career and technical education (CTE) from the Virginia Department of Education. Among those honored with individual regional awards for excellence in CTE teaching were Sheila Bailey of the Henrico Education Association and Brookland Middle School; Connie Ray Yeatts of the Pittsylvania Education Association and Chatham Middle School; and DeDe Whichard of the Washington County Education Association and Abingdon High School.

The awards were also presented by the Virginia Advisory Committee for Career and Technical Education and the Virginia Community College System.

The following educators have received 2007 Aviation Grants from the Virginia Department of Aviation and the Virginia Aviation and Space Education Forum: Donald B. Kawalek of the Loudoun Education Association and Blue Ridge Middle School; Gwendolyn Lee-Lomax of the Hampton Education Association, the CHROME After-School Enrichment Club and Francis Mallory Elementary School; and Anita M. Winfrey and William M. Howell of the Henry County Education Association and Laurel Park Middle School.
