Chesterfield Member Brings Home the Bacon
on TV Game Show

Morgan Saxby, a member of the Chesterfield Education Association, recently made a splash on the TV quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” The fifth-grade teacher at A.M. Davis Elementary School took home $65,500 in winnings—and it wasn’t even his first foray into game-show success. In 2012, he won three “Jeopardy!” games, piling up $68,401.

Four VEA members, two from Newport News and two from Fairfax County, will be integrating technology into their instruction in fun new ways, thanks to grants from the NEA Foundation.

Karen Ciotta and Deborah McEaddy, of Epes Elementary School in Newport News, will use a $2,000 Student Achievement Grant to begin a program called “iCatching iPads,” using the tablet devices to combine new technology with the basic skills of early reading and writing for kindergartners. E-books and other interactive activities will help student hone their skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Fairfax members Sue Englemann and Michele Copeland of Potowmack Elementary School will take a $5,000 Student Achievement Grant and launch the “Kindle Club.” Students will meet weekly in the school’s library to discuss books from the Virginia Readers’ Choice Program and take Accelerated Reader tests.

Paula Johnson, a Virginia Beach Education Association member and an assistant principal at Landstown High School, has been named the 2013 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.

Two members of the Prince William Education Association, librarian Preston Lazer and social studies teacher Rose Gallitz, were invited to be part of Digital Learning Day, held at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. and attended by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and other policymakers. The event, which was simulcast online, showcased excellent examples of technology in schools, including an example of student work shown on video by Lazer and Gallitz.
