Chesterfield’s Mann Honored by Univ. of Mary Washington

Barbara Mann, a VEA-Retired member from Chesterfield and current member of the CEA Board of Directors, was chosen by her alma mater, the University of Mary Washington, to serve as the College of Education’s 2013 Educator-in-Residence.

Mann, who taught in elementary schools for 35 years, delivered a lecture at UMW’s third annual Educator-in-Residence event, which also featured the recognition of graduating education majors, student research presentations, and a reception.

Mann holds a bachelor’s degree from UMW and a master’s from Old Dominion University.

Bristol (Virginia) Education Association member Judy Young, a math teacher at Virginia High School, has been named the Rotary Club’s 2013 Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the city.

Also nominated for the award were BVEA members Karen Cross of Virginia Middle School and Autumn Dowdy of Stonewall Jackson Elementary School.

Jody Sommerfeldt, a lecturer in teaching and learning in the Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University, has been named the 2013 Student VEA Advisor of the Year. She has served as advisor for five years to the ODU chapter, which is the largest in the state.

Kellie Blair Hardt, a member of the Manassas Education Association who also currently serves on the NEA Board of Directors, has been selected a 2013 Pearson Foundation Global Learning Fellow and will participate in a special tour of Brazilian schools this summer.

Only 36 educators in the nation were chosen for the Fellows program by the NEA Foundation. In addition to the Brazil trip, Fellows will spend a year honing their global competency skills for use in classroom instruction.

Henry County Education Association President Dorothy Hemenway Carter, an English teacher at Magna Vista High School, has published a novel. Called Facing Fallout, it’s the story of a student journalist and her quest to find the cause of her younger brother’s serious illness. You can learn more on
