FEA’s Blomquist Is Virginia’s History Teacher of the Year

Katie Blomquist,
a member of the Fairfax Education Association and a social studies teacher at Sunrise Valley Elementary School, has been named the 2013 Virginia History Teacher of the Year. The award, which comes with a $1,000 cash prize, was presented by the Virginia Department of Education, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and Preserve America.

Blomquist, who had previously been honored at Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Council for the Social Studies, is now Virginia’s nominee for the National History Teacher of the Year Award.

Six VEA members have been honored by The Washington Post with Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards, given annually to teachers in the DC metropolitan area to recognize excellence. Among this year’s winners are Jennifer Alexander of the Manassas Education Association and Osbourn High School; Joel Block of the Falls Church Education Association and George Mason High School; Kathy Crane of the Fauquier Education Association and W.G. Coleman Elementary School; Tanya Green of the Stafford Education Association and Hampton Oaks Elementary School; Tracy Holland of the Manassas Park Education Association and Cougar Elementary School; and Erica Russell of the Arlington Education Association and Francis Scott Key Elementary School.

Five Association members from the Richmond metropolitan area have been awarded grants for travel and study by the R.E.B. Foundation. From the Richmond Education Association, winners were Cecilia Wright Boswell of Maggie Walker Governor’s School, Lori R. Kalber of Overby-Sheppard Elementary School, LaChaunne Rachael Perry of Woodville Elementary School, and Rodney A. Robinson of Armstrong High School. From the Chesterfield Education Association, Roger Douglas Lattimer of Cosby High School was among grant awardees.
