Fairfax’s Nealon Honored for History Teaching Excellence

Fairfax Education Association member Kathleen Nealon, who teaches at North Springfield Elementary School, has been awarded the 17th annual Brenton S. Halsey Teaching Excellence Award by the Virginia Historical Society.

Nealon earned the honor for her outstanding work in the classroom and for her ability to conduct staff development workshops for her colleagues, showing how to use primary sources, replica artifacts, paintings and maps to engage young learners.

Also from FEA, Jennifer Orr, a first grade teacher at Annandale Terrace Elementary School, has been selected as one of the 25 members of the 2013 Emerging Leaders Class by ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). Emerging Leaders, who are selected from around the nation, will receive training to help them influence education programs, policy and practice at both the local and national levels.

Greensville Education Association member Shawnta L. Posey-James, an earth science teacher at Greensville County High School, has been named as one of Virginia’s 2014 Regional Teachers of the Year by the Virginia Department of Education.

Abigail Agresta-Stratton, a member of the Chesterfield Education Association, has received a 2013 Dance Teacher Magazine K-12 Award. She was recognized for her exemplary work as a dance teacher at the Chesterfield Specialty Center for the Arts, which is housed at Thomas Dale High School.

Loudoun Education Association members John Lord and Mike Barancewicz are two of the energy education specialists for the county’s schools. Because of the quality of the work they’re doing, Loudoun was one of only three school divisions in the U.S. to be singled out by the Environmental Protection Agency for “sustained excellence” in energy conservation.
