Petersburg’s Mayo Earns National Military Honor

Petersburg Education Association member Shauna Mayo, an instructional specialist at Robert E. Lee Elementary School, has received the 2013 “Troops to Teachers” Service Award. Mayo, who began teaching in Petersburg in 2005, served for 21 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a master sergeant.

She received the Award in recognition of her commitment to public education and the teaching profession, and for creating a positive learning environment for her students. She was the city’s Teacher of the Year in 2010-11.
 
Robin Wallin of the Education Association of Alexandria has been named Virginia’s School Nurse Administrator of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Nurses. A Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Nationally Certified School Nurse, Wallin joined Alexandria City Public Schools in 1997 as a school nurse and became the division’s Health Services Coordinator in 2005.

Richmond Education Association member Jason Kissoon, an exceptional-education teacher at Lucille Brown Middle School, has been named the city’s Teacher of the Year. After working in the business world, Kissoon went back to school in order to teach, earning his teaching certificate at Virginia Union University and a master’s degree at the University of Richmond.
 
Four Richmond-area Association members have been awarded R.E.B. Grants, which are given annually by the Community Foundation and are meant to fund non-traditional academic projects often involving international travel. Among the 2013 winners are Ann Campbell of the Richmond Education Association and William Fox Elementary School; Cynthia Robinson-Carney of the Richmond Education Association and John Marshall High School; Ryan Abbott of the Chesterfield Education Association and Cosby High School; and Artice Appling of the Chesterfield Education Association and Manchester Middle School.

VEA’s annual SPARKS program was featured in the 2013 edition of Tomorrow’s Teachers, an NEA publication. A photo of the last SPARKS gathering at Wintergreen ski resort was featured, along with quotes from Samantha Killion of the Fredericksburg Education Association and Eric Pioch of the Chesterfield Education Association.
