Two VEA Members Finalists for National Award

Two VEA members have been selected as state finalists for the 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award – regarded as the nation’s top honor for mathematics and science teachers – recognizes teachers who develop and implement outstanding classroom programs that improve student learning.

Barbara-Ann Adcock, of the Powhatan County Education Association and a science teacher at Pocahontas Elementary School, and Susan Eckenrode of the Rockingham County Education Association, a science teacher at John Wayland Elementary School, are among Virginia’s finalists, which this year honor K-6 educators.
2014 Presidential Award winners will be recognized during a week-long schedule of events held in Washington, D.C. next spring, including a visit with President Obama at the White House.

Precious Crabtree, a Fairfax Education Association member and an art teacher at Deer Park Elementary School, is among 39 national finalists for the 2015 California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence, which will be presented at the NEA Foundation’s gala in Washington, D.C. in February.

Because Crabtree is a finalist, Deer Park will receive a $650 check. Crabtree also has a chance to be named one of the five finalists for the award, who each receive $10,000. The winner gets an additional $25,000.

Education Association of Alexandria member Erin Fitch, an English teacher at T.C. Williams High School, has earned an award from the University of Tulsa for her ability to inspire students. Nominated by a former student who just graduated from UT, Fitch is one of only three teachers to win the award out of the 800 who were nominated by graduating UT students when asked about a teacher who was a particular inspiration to them. She received $2,000, plus an additional $1,000 to be spent for T.C. Williams.
