Loudoun Member Wins National Environmental Honor

Liam McGranaghan
, a member of the Loudoun Education Association and a science teacher at Loudoun Valley High School, is one of just 15 national winners of the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators.

The Award is given jointly by the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency. McGranaghan is a 26-year classroom veteran.

Two VEA members are among Virginia’s Regional Teachers of the Year for 2016, selected by a panel of classroom teachers, representatives of professional and educational associations and the business community, last year’s Virginia Teacher of the Year. Among the candidates for that honor this year are Ruthanne Cole of the Bland County Education Association, a science teacher at Bland County High School, and Edward McCann Jr. of the Appomattox Education Association, an agricultural education teacher at Appomattox County High School.

Virginia’s Teacher of the Year goes on to compete in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Gloucester Education Association member Stephanie Sowers, a science teacher at Peasley Middle School, has been named a finalist for a 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Winners receive $10,000, a presidential certificate and a trip to the nation's capital.

Prince William Education Association member Lillian Orlich was featured on the cover of NEA Today’s Retiree Edition this summer, in honor of her 61 years as a teacher and school counselor. She’s not yet, however, a retiree—at age 87, she remains a counselor at Osburn Park High School.

Natalie T. Walden, of the Stafford Education Association and Shirley Heim Middle School, has been named the Middle School Business Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Business Education Association.
