Urgent Announcement on Virginia Incentive Awards

If you are a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), be sure to read the following notice from VEA's Betty Lambdin, director of the Office of Teaching and Learning. Posted 9-8-2010.

For the 2010-2011 school year, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will be collecting information for the National Board Certification Incentive Awards in a different manner than in years past.

This school year, school divisions statewide will be reporting National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) who currently meet the eligibility criteria for National Board Incentive Awards within their school division. After gathering this data, the school division will report this information directly to the VDOE. Upon verification of each NBCT's status, the VDOE will then issue each school division the incentive awards, pending the availability of funds. As they have previously, school divisions will then be responsible for distributing these funds to their NBCTs.

In years past, the VDOE required NBCTs to submit forms verifying their employment status in order to receive the incentive award.  NBCTs will NOT submit forms this year. The school divisions will report this information; therefore, no paperwork will be required of NBCTs from the VDOE.

NBCTs should ensure that their school division is aware of their current NBCT status and that they have a copy of the NBC license, as this is essential to expedite this process. NBCTs should contact their employing school division's Human Resource Office or National Board coordinator immediately.

Additional information regarding the National Board Incentive Award and the eligibility requirements is available through the VDOE website here. Superintendent's Memo #209-10 concerning the new data collection also provides guidance.
