Futrell, Tedrow Appointed to NEA Commission

The National Education Association has created the Commission on Effective Teachers and Teaching, a nationwide group that will study the teaching profession and make recommendations for improving teacher and teaching effectiveness. Twenty-one distinguished educators make up the group, two of whom are VEA members. Appointed to the commission are Mary Hatwood Futrell, former VEA and NEA president and current member of the George Washington University faculty; and Mary K. Tedrow, a member of the Winchester Education Association and an English teacher at John Handley High School.

Prince William Education Association member Robert Misenko, a physical education teacher at Stonewall Jackson High School, is being inducted into the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame. He is the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball and was named a first team All-American after his senior season.

Ashleigh Fisher, a member of the Roanoke Education Association and a reading specialist at Westside Elementary School, has been named the Reading Teacher of the Year by the Virginia State Reading Association.

Two Association members have been honored by the Virginia Art Education Association as part of its annual awards program. Roanoke Education Association member Elizabeth Campbell was chosen as Elementary Art Educator of the Year and Bedford County Education Association member Susan Hubble was named Secondary Art Educator of the Year.

Newly-appointed members of the VEA’s Fitz Turner Commission for Human and Civil Rights are Virginia “Ginny” Browne of the Page County Education Association, Kerdene DePriest of the Fairfax Education Association, Kelly Miller of the Roanoke Education Association, and Terrie Wilkins of the Sussex Education Association. They will serve three-year terms.
