State Budget Cuts Could Cost Virginia 23,000 Educators
Public school students across Virginia will lose education programs and communities could suffer as many as 23,000 layoffs as a result of the state budget now under consideration in Richmond, according to the Virginia Education Association.
"If something isn't done to stop the out-of-control freight train that is heading down the track in the form of the pending budget for Virginia, our students, our parents and our school professionals won't know what ran them over this time next year," said Dr. Kitty Boitnott, president of the Virginia Education Association.
In addition to the economic impact of 23,000 layoffs, students will face larger class sizes and loss of educational and extra-curricular programs.
Boitnott warned about the effect of the pending budget during a news conference Thursday at the capital. "Virginia parents, beware. Virginia business leaders, beware. Local taxpayers, beware. The budget under consideration in the Virginia General Assembly is a disaster waiting to happen."
