Resources for Teaching African-American and Women’s History

Are you looking for resources to use in February for African-American History Month or March for Women’s History Month? In fact, you may be looking for resources to teach about the struggles of people of color, class struggles or union history. Check out this new, must-see resource that is free and available online. The Zinn Education Project: Teaching a People's History website features over 75 free, downloadable teaching activities for students to bring a people's history to the classroom. The site also lists hundreds of recommended books, films, and websites. The teaching activities and resources are organized by theme, time period, and grade level. This is the only collection of its kind for educators -- print or online -- in the country. To check it out, go to http://www.zinnedproject.org/.

Two resources from the Library of Congress worth checking out: http://www.africanamericanhistorymonth.gov/teachers.html
and http://womenshistorymonth.gov/teachers.html. They offer downloadable resources and ideas to bring primary sources into the classroom.

Finally, get acquainted with Teaching Tolerance, another excellent resource (www.teachingtolerance.org). Educators can select a grade and subject and search on a topic. Their teaching kits and magazine subscription are free! Their “Mix It Up” program provides a plan and details to develop inclusive school communities. You can also browse (and search by grade and subject) the best tolerance-related resources, from publishers large and small, recommended and reviewed by the Teaching Tolerance staff.
