VEA-R Schedules Lobby Day for Retired Educators

On Thursday, January 27, 2011, retired VEA-NEA members are urged to travel to Richmond to meet with legislators as part of the VEA-Retired Lobby Day.

Among the items on VEA's Legislative Agenda this session is a request for a JLARC study of VRS Funding. The 2010 session significantly reduced the contribution amount for teachers and other educators, perhaps to the point of jeopardizing the future solvency of the fund. Here's how the issue is framed in the Legislative Agenda:

The Constitution requires that VRS, "Retirement system benefits shall be funded using methods which are consistent with generally accepted actuarial principles."  The teacher fund stood at 106.2% in 2001 and is now funded at a 67.2% funding level. As the Pew Charitable Trust noted, "… Virginia's funds aren't in as healthy shape as they used to be, and the state has stumbled a bit in making its full annual contributions toward its long-term obligation.  … the Commonwealth has frequently made less than the annual required contribution, as set by its own actuaries." Has the continued underfunding been consistent with this Constitutional mandate? VEA seeks a JLARC examination of this question.

Fairfax Retired has chartered a bus to take retired Northern Virginians to VEA-R Lobby day on the 27th. There will be two pick-up points, one at the parking lot of the Fair Oaks Shopping Mall in the western part of Fairfax and one in the central part of the county, at the Little River United Church of Christ parking lot directly across Little River Turnpike (Route.236) from the Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale. This second pick-up is just a mile or so from the 495 Beltway and has easy access to head on down toward US 95 south to Richmond. Any retired educator (VEA-R or Fairfax County Retired Educator) is welcome to ride the bus with us. Its capacity is at least 45 passengers. Details on the bus will be posted here when finalized.

Fairfax's Barbara Allen is spearheading the VEA-R Lobby Day and says, "We certainly hope that retired educators from all over the state will be interested in participating in this lobbying effort."

Can't make the VEA-Retired Lobby Day on January 27th consider attending the primary VEA Lobby Day on January 24th.
