How to Meet With Your Legislator

How to Meet With Your Legislator - VEA Website

As VEA prepares for renewed collective bargaining efforts in 2027, legislators need to hear directly from constituents about why this issue remains a priority. These Meeting with legislators in their home districts is one of the most effective ways to build support for collective bargaining before the General Assembly session begins. District meetings give educators and school employees an opportunity to share first-hand experiences, answer questions, and help lawmakers understand how collective bargaining would strengthen schools and workplaces in their own communities conversations can help build on the progress made in 2026, deepen relationships with supportive lawmakers, and encourage undecided or hesitant legislators to engage more seriously with the issue.

Advocacy Tip: Make It Personal

The most effective messages include a brief personal example. Legislators and their staff often receive large numbers of identical emails and form letters on important issues. While those messages demonstrate support, personalized messages and email subject lines are more likely to be read individually and help decision-makers understand how an issue affects real people in their communities.

Before sending your message, consider adding one or two sentences about your own experience. You might share:

  • A workplace challenge that could be addressed through collective bargaining
  • Why educator voice matters in your school or community
  • How stronger recruitment and retention would benefit students
  • Why you were disappointed to see collective bargaining legislation vetoed
  • What changes you would like to see for educators, school staff, or students

Even a brief personal story can make your message more memorable and impactful. Your story helps decision-makers understand what’s at stake.

  • Before your meeting: know your ask and confirm whether your legislator supported the 2026 bill.
  • During your meeting: be respectful, concise, and specific.
  • After your meeting: send a thank you note and report back to VEA so the campaign can track follow-up

Key Messaging:

  • Please support collective bargaining legislation when it is reintroduced in 2027.
  • Educators and school employees deserve a meaningful voice in workplace decisions that affect students, schools, and communities.
  • Collective bargaining can help recruit and retain high-quality educators and support staff.
  • The progress made in 2026 reflects years of organizing, coalition-building, and legislative work, and I hope you will help build on that progress.
