The Virginia Education Association’s Minority & Women’s Concerns Committee Introduces HBCU Pride Week

Historically black colleges and universities, which date back to the 1800‘s with the founding of what is now Cheyney in 1837, have been institutions of academic excellence and empowerment in times when Black students were turned away from other halls of higher education.
Still today, approximately 100 accredited HBCU’s are vessels of knowledge that nurture a sense of community through culture and history while promoting scholarship and intellectual growth. These schools are known for their cultural pageantry, social advocacy and scholarship. Because the HBCU community fosters a sense of self-identity and self-worth, these institutions have often been at the forefront of social justice movements. Recognizing the richness that these institutions provide, the Virginia Education Association wishes to salute all our HBCU’s during our first HBCU PRIDE WEEK.
Don’t forget to take pictures of you and your participating staff members and upload the pictures to your social media and use the hashtag – #VEAHBCUProud
