VEA Statement on Campus Safety and Security

VEA is aware of the threats made against Virginia State University and Hampton University this morning. We have been in contact with our SVEA chapters at both schools and everyone is safe and accounted for at this time.
Both institutions are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and we are deeply concerned about the apparent racial component to these threats. This targeting of HBCUs represents not only an attack on campus safety but also on the rich legacy and vital mission of these institutions that have served as pillars of educational opportunity and community strength.
This incident underscores a fundamental truth: schools and universities should be the safest places in every community. Students, their families, and educators deserve to feel safe and welcome at school. When students fear for their lives, they cannot learn effectively or reach their full potential. Our students and school employees deserve to know we are unwaveringly committed to their safety and well-being.
According to a American Library Association survey, 67% of voters oppose banning books from school libraries?
