Voters across the Commonwealth made their voices heard, electing candidates who champion public education with historic results. In particular, the election of Abigail Spanberger and Ghazala Hashmi reflects Virginians’ dedication to pragmatic, equitable, and pro-education governance.
“Voters in Virginia resoundingly embraced Governor Abigail Spanberger, the first woman Governor of Virginia, and chose candidates who will fight back against cuts to public education,” said Carol Bauer, president of the Virginia Education Association. “VEA is looking forward to continuing our partnership with Governor-elect Spanberger in making public education work for all students and our membership.”
VEA also congratulates other pro-public education candidates, including Jay Jones (AG) Josh Thomas (HD21), Elizabeth Guzman (HD22), John McAuliff (HD30), Sam Rasoul (HD38), Lily Franklin (HD41), May Nivar (HD57), Nicole Cole (HD66), and Kimberly Pope Adams (HD82). Several other races have yet to be called.
“I am so proud of all the work our members did to ensure these important wins for public education and students,” said Bauer. “We door-knocked, spoke to legislators, wrote postcards, and much more. We can accomplish so much when we work together, and we are excited to keep this momentum moving forward.”
The average pay of Virginia public school teachers in 2023-24 was $65,830. That is $4,260 below the national average of $70,090.
