Fitz Turner Commission Awards Program - VEA Website

VEA’s Fitz Turner Commission to Honor Deserving Educators, Organizations

VEA’s Fitz Turner Commission for Human Relations and Civil Rights, a group made up of Union members from around the state, will honor individuals or groups who excel in their efforts on behalf of public education in Virginia. Nominations are now open for the following VEA awards to be presented at the 2025 VEA convention:

  • Fitz Turner Award: Honors outstanding contributions in intergroup relations and the enhancement of respect for human and civil rights.
  • Mary Hatwood Futrell Award: Honors leadership in fostering equality in educational opportunity and promoting equity and excellence in public education.
  • Barbara Johns Youth Award: Honors a student or student organization whose activities promote the dignity and esteem of others.
