Leadership Training: Strengthen Your Union Skills!

Calling all local presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, and secretaries who will hold these elected positions in 2026-2027!

Learn to create a vision for growth, lead with a social justice perspective, identify diverse leadership talent, navigate governing documents, manage finances properly, foster teamwork, and handle membership reconciliation and cancellations. It’s just before the Summer Organizing Institute (July 15-17) at the same location—consider staying for both events!

Topics to be covered include:

Creating a vision for growing your local with increased membership and collective power.
Leading your local with a social justice lens.
Understanding the VEA Structure – Governance and Staff.
Presentation of the governing documents, election guidelines, and standard operating practices each local union should have, and the opportunity to review the current governing documents from your local.
A review of bylaws and other important legal stuff.
Participation in role-specific round-table discussions.
Learning how to manage the finances of the local union properly.
Discussion of leaders’ well-being and the creation of a yearly calendar for the local.
Review of the role of executive boards, the importance of teamwork in the executive board and local, and the proper use of one’s power. How to prepare and hold local union meetings will be covered.
Importance of membership roster reconciliation and procedures for membership cancellations.
Opportunities for networking with other local leaders.
Activity to help your local set membership goals.
