VEA PRIME: Praxis Equity Bridge

VEA PRIME: Praxis Equity Bridge - VEA Website

In the Commonwealth, we have seen an alarming number of those who have stated that they are struggling to pass their Praxis assessment and obtain their teaching license.  Provisionally licensed teachers and aspiring educators are overwhelmed with so many things that they can’t prepare thoroughly for the Praxis.  The time they can devote is neither structured nor consistent.  Elementary teacher candidates have to take 5 Praxis tests and can end up paying between $336-$412. Non-elementary teaching candidates pay a range of $130-$156 for their test.  This cost is typically an additional hardship for many who often delay testing (which can impact their licensure status) or go without basic needs so that they can afford to pay for their test(s).  This is especially true of those who are either still in school or are in their first few years of teaching.

The Virginia Education Association believes that being able to bridge the gap that many face with payment, time, structure, and study resources is instrumental in meeting the needs of those who wish to be licensed teachers.  By offering vouchers and targeted assistance, we will be able to use an equity-forward lens to provide support.  This support will be individualized to build skill, confidence, accessibility, and time.  Providing a structured option for preparing for the Praxis will help to diminish the anxiety that many face when thinking about studying for this assessment.  We also believe that providing a means of lowering the out-of-pocket expense is another weight that is lifted as participants balance their lives in conjunction with preparing to test.  This financial barrier is especially seen in participant demographics who may have socio-economic challenges or work in divisions with high needs.
