Effective mentoring programs can enhance the expertise of employees, retain quality educators, and improve student outcomes. We’re looking for local associations to assist in building such programs. We are looking for members to help us write content for our new learning management system. If you have a skill set that would translate well into an independent learning course, we are looking for you. Our goal is to have content on our portal for every type of member. Regardless of your role (teacher, bus driver, administrator, library/media specialist, paraprofessional, retired, etc.), we are looking for you to help create quality learning courses for other members. We are looking for National Board Certified Teachers to fill a variety of roles as we advocate for National Board Certification in Virginia and support National Board Candidates. We will begin the process of pairing candidates with mentors and forming small group cohorts in August and are seeking Professional Learning Facilitators (PLFs) to serve as mentors and cohort facilitators. As we work to inform our local and state decision-makers, we are also looking for NBCTs who would be willing to share their story with our affiliate members, parents, policymakers, and other stakeholders. VEA offers support for National Board candidates seeking initial certification or maintenance of certification. Our NBCT Professional Learning Facilitators (PLFs) serve as 1:1 mentors and lead small group cohorts. The VEA is hosting two Jump Start events this fall for educators seeking to earn or maintain their National Board Certification.

Educators seeking to earn their initial National Board Certification have an opportunity to participate in a virtual Jump Start this fall. Guided by NBCT facilitators, candidates will unpack their certificate standards, component instructions, and fundamentals of the National Board process. This virtual Jump Start meets Thursday evenings beginning September 29 for six three-hour sessions; it’s available to VEA members only and space is limited.

VEA is offering a one-day MOC Jump Start for current NBCTs seeking to maintain their certification on October 29 at the Hotel Madison in Harrisonburg, VA. At this in-person event, candidates will review National Board fundamentals such as the Five Core Propositions, Architecture of Accomplished Teaching, and certification standards. Trained NBCT facilitators will guide candidates through unpacking the requirements for the MOC process and strategies for preparing for the work ahead. MOC Jump Start is intended for NBCTs whose certificates will expire in 2023, 2024, or 2025.
