Welcome to Teaching and Learning TODAY. We hope your school year is off to a great start and only continues to get better as the year progresses! Our goal is to provide high-quality professional learning for all educators – teachers, counselors, education support professionals, administrators, and other stakeholders – to increase the chances of you having the best year yet. Teaching and Learning has many opportunities for growth to offer, but we also invite you to be a part of the change that needs to happen. Monitor this newsletter regularly and respond to those areas that interest you. We facilitate the development of professional learning by members, for members. Allow us to assist you to learn, grow professionally, and impact others!
As we wind down the first six months of a 3-year grant, we are excited to report progress in the areas of National Board support, our learning portal and workshops, and the initial plans for mentor programs. This is only the beginning of reimagining and rebuilding the value of VEA membership! Stay tuned each month to this newsletter for updates on opportunities.
Do you enjoy being able to take your professional learning into your own hands from the comfort of your home? Have you had a situation where you needed to learn a new skill quickly so that you could address a problem the very next day? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the new VEA Learning Portal is your answer! Keep your eyes on your email…it’s coming next week!
Aspiring Educators (SVEA-AE) to Active Professional Rebate
Former Aspiring Educators (AE) who join VEA/NEA during their first year of eligibility for Active Professional Membership are entitled to a special rebate. The rebate is $20 for each year of membership as an Aspiring Educator (Student Member) for up to 4 years, no matter what state you were an AE member in. Someone who joined the AE program for one year can apply for a $20 rebate. And an AE member for 4 years is entitled to apply for an $80 rebate! The rebate application must be submitted no later than May 1st.
If your AE membership was right here in Virginia with SVEA-AE, you would also qualify for an additional $5 per year of student membership (up to 4 years). Use this form to submit your VEA rebate.
From our friends at TTAC Online, check out the article entitled “New Guidance Helps Schools Support Students with Disabilities and Avoid Discriminatory Use of Discipline (Office of Civil Rights) July 2022.” The U.S. Department of Education announced the release of new guidance from its Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) to help public elementary and secondary schools fulfill their responsibilities to meet the needs of students with disabilities and avoid the discriminatory use of student discipline.

We all have watched the news and have seen how the White House is making positive gains in assisting educators with student loan debt. Did you know that NEA is working on your behalf to help push this conversation? Click HERE to see the press release from NEA.
