Educator Action Week 2022

Educator Action Week 2022 - VEA Website

We're Going Virtual!

These past few years have been challenging times for our public schools. That is why now, more than ever, it is important for our elected officials to hear from you!

With the increasing risk of the Omicron variant, we will be moving our usual Lobby Day activities to a virtual setting. Join us for VEA’s ‘Educator Action Week’, January 23-28. This will be a week of events featuring different opportunities for you to get involved and show legislators why they must focus on increasing COVID safety protocols, school funding, and raising teacher salaries to the national average.

See the calendar of events below for more details on ways you can use your voice to make a difference for our students and public schools!

Schedule of Events

Sunday, January 23 – Legislative Briefing, 6pm

Join our Government Relations team for a crash-course in being an effective legislative advocate for public education! Learn what you need to know about how to talk to legislators about VEA’s legislative priorities and how you can schedule your lobbying visits virtually at this comprehensive briefing.

Monday, January 24 – Educator Action Rally, 6pm

Join President Dr. James J. Fedderman in a celebration of union solidarity and pride as we open the new legislative session. We know this year will be full of many challenges, but we also know that if we work together, we can overcome anything.

Tuesday, January 25 – Issues and Impacts: Education Forum, 6pm

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to our legislative priorities. Join policy experts, member leaders, and the legislators themselves in conversations centering around three of our most pressing legislative issues: public school funding, collective bargaining, and charter schools.

Wednesday, January 26 – Solidarity Wednesday

How do we show our collective power to legislators when they are all in Richmond but you are scattered all over the Commonwealth? Simple – show your public education pride by wearing red, filling out one of our signs, and taking a picture with some of your fellow union members! Send the pictures back to us or post on social media using the hashtag #VEAstrong.

Thursday, January 27 – How Did Richmond Win Collective Bargaining? Organizing, Structure, and Strategy, 6pm

The Richmond Education Association was the first local in 44 years to win the right to collectively bargain. We want to share their learnings, structures, and work done to secure this historic 8-1 vote for collective bargaining. We will also share their next steps.

Friday, January 28 – VEA Live: Legislative Roundup, 2pm

The General Assembly moves so quickly, sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Join President James J. Fedderman and Government Relations Director Shane Riddle for a fast-paced roundup of the highlights (and lowlights) of what happened at the General Assembly this week and a preview of what is to come.
